Project Objective

Energate and PowerStream are introducing an optional dynamic pricing program for PowerStream residential customers in which the daily on-peak price will vary in response to overall provincial demand. Customers will be given opportunities to shift their demand from on-peak periods – which are more expensive – to lower-demand periods. The objective is to demonstrate how dynamic pricing can simultaneously create value for the electricity grid by reducing strain (peak load), and for customers by way of lower electricity costs.

Company Background

Energate is the leader in Consumer Demand Response Solutions for utilities and their residential customers. The company provides home energy management solutions including software, portals, mobile applications and wireless devices such as gateways, smart thermostats, load control switches, and consumer energy displays. Energate’s standards-based open Consumer Connected Demand Response (CCDR) platform allows utilities to immediately address residential demand and allows consumers to more effectively manage energy use. Energate solutions leverage the Smart Grid to mitigate supply and demand challenges, increase the use of renewables and utilize dynamic rate structures.

Benefit(s) to Ontario Residents and Businesses

  • Project participants will have an Energate Foundation™ Smart Thermostat and Home Energy Gateway installed which has a comfort setting feature that allows consumers to determine how their HVAC system reacts to price changes.
  • The solution creates an adaptive infrastructure providing the Ontario LDCs with the ability to use price to more effectively manage demand.
  • The project will demonstrate how dynamic pricing can simultaneously create value for both the customer (reduce their costs) and the grid (greater peak reduction compared to TOU).
  • The project provides an opportunity for Energate to leverage the lessons learned with PowerStream to the utilities across Ontario, North America and the rest of the world.

Project Collaborators

  • PowerStream will develop and implement the dynamic pricing program. This will include defining the rate program with the IESO and Energate; recruiting customers; deploying equipment in participant homes; and creating a parallel dynamic pricing billing system that tracks savings compared to TOU.

Project Status

The project was launched in February 2014. Since then, Energate and PowerStream have worked with the IESO to define the structure of the dynamic pricing program and the time periods and rates that will be applied. For the winter period, participants will follow the regular TOU schedule. For the summer period, a Variable Peak Pricing (VPP) program will be followed. All year round, Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) events can also be generated.
Energate and PowerStream are now developing the technologies and solutions to launch the program publicly and to start recruiting participants.

Opportunities

Good progress has been achieved with respect to the definition and implementation of the proposed Dynamic Price Program structure but it is still too early to be disclosed at this point. It will be disclosed shortly with marketing material that will be used to recruit participants.
