Intelligent Electric Vehicle Charging Systems (IEVCS)

This pilot project will demonstrate the effects of electric vehicle charging on transformers by creating a real time transformer monitoring and analytics solution. This solution has two components:
- Consumer Control – Integration of Smart meter with In Home Display (IHD), mobile & Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger to provide information on charging pattern and cost of charging EVs vis-a-vis rates of use-time
- Power System Flexibility – Transformers associated to the homes with EVs will be equipped with Smart Meters. During EV charging, Smart transformer meters will monitor the load conditions and send the data every 15 minutes to the analytics platform which will analyze the data with set parameters. Based on the loading pattern of transformers, the system will have the capability to curtail or begin the charging process. This will not only bring elasticity of demand on the distribution network but will also improve reliability and reduce congestion on the grid. The data will be collated over the duration of the project and used to develop a dashboard that will be useful to the utilities for grid planning and management.
The key benefit of the solution includes real time monitoring of the transformers and ability to take action before transformers get overloaded. The project will also analyze use of EVs for demand response.
The components of the proposed solution are customer smart meters, Electric Vehicle Charging systems and distribution transformer monitoring infrastructure to create communication platforms that will bring the data for advance analytics. Advance analytics will enable:
- Home Energy Analytics
- EV Charger Analytics
- Distribution Network Analytics

Electric Vehicle adoption has a clear and direct impact on GHG emissions; this solution will help Ontario to accelerate the EV adoption rates by minimising the risk on existing distribution network.

One of the key outcomes will be a boost to the EV industry, as this solution addresses uncertainties involved in EV infrastructure. Through the data of electric vehicles charging patterns, transformer meter, home energy consumption this project will provide better information to help utilities operate their local distribution system to accommodate EVs.
Successful adoption of this solution has potential to create jobs and open up market for other indirect services and products like Electric Vehicles, EV Chargers, IHDs, Transformer Monitoring Meters and Mobile applications.
